Mike Moran, Author of SEM, Inc., IBM Distinguished Engineer, and AI Expert as Shared Audiences Chief Strategy Officer
If you’re a veteran of the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or Search Engine Marketing (SEM) industry, there’s zero chance you don’t know who Mike Moran is. Along with Bill Hunt, Mike co-authored arguably the most popular book on Search Marketing ever written. Search Engine Marketing, Inc was first published in 2005 and multiple editions have been published since.
I first met Mike in 2009 when we worked together at a social media and digital marketing agency in New York City—the same agency where I met Robin McCarthy, my co-founder at Shared Audiences. I was Director of Search Marketing and Robin was Director of Performance Marketing. Mike was a Senior Strategist, advising the agency in areas related to search, product management, and artificial intelligence (AI). I learned a tremendous amount from Mike back then, and now 14 years later, I’m thrilled to continue that learning arc as he joins Shared Audiences to be our Chief Strategy Officer.
Mike’s track record goes far deeper than his authorship of SEM Inc, and two other award-winning marketing books, “Do It Wrong Quickly” and “Outside-In Marketing: Using Big Data to Guide Your Content Marketing”. He’s been working with search engine and AI technology since the 1980s, spending over 30 years at IBM, and retiring as a Distinguished Engineer. During his tenure Mike led the IBM product team that developed the first commercial linguistic search engine in 1989, he managed Global Web Experience at ibm.com for eight years, including the web analytics team, and spent six years working on text analytics and AI projects at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center. Mike holds 12 US patents in search and retrieval technology.

Will started Shared Audiences after spending over 18 years leading growth marketing, content, SEO and SEM at large and small tech companies and agencies. Previously he was Global Head of Content Marketing at Outbrain, Head of Search Marketing at Ogilvy, and SEO specialist for brands like 3M and Siemens. Will co-founded the VC-backed edtech company Bakpax (acquired by Teachers Pay Teachers), and led marketing at Knewton (acquired by Wiley). He lives in Weston, CT, with his wife, two girls, and dog (who you will often hear snoring on Zoom calls).
